Like Sonic Forces, it’s hard to take any of it seriously unless you’re fully bought in on the franchise’s extensive lore. The games aren’t available individually on the PlayStation Store, and only 2 and CD are available to purchase separately on the Xbox. Sega says you’ll be able to buy the Sega Ages versions of Sonic 1 and 2 on the Nintendo Switch or play 2 with Nintendo Switch Online Plus. Sonic Origins also shows off just how diverse the original line-up of Sonic titles were. Each game feels wholly unique, whether it be in the gameplay design or art direction. The time-traveling adventures of Sonic CD were a fresh change of pace from the journey in Sonic 1 and 2.

Just look how incredibly detailed it looks – but not clunky and over-rendered. Refined, full of the classic SEGA charm with neat little touches. Like a chili dog with the right amount of toppings – not overdone, just exactly like Sonic sonic emulator 2 in HD should feel. The game features bosses in every stage, and not every boss requires a fight either. We won’t spoil it, but be sure to play through Chemical Plant Zone. Sonic Mania Plus is available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC.

I would love for DK to create a 3D series of gameplay that plays like the Werehog, but it really doesn’t belong in a Sonic game because the Werehog gameplay emphasizes VERY different gameplay elements. I’ve played at least half of these and beaten around 1/3 of them. Just last year, I was finally able to take off my nostalgia goggles, and realize that none of the Sonic are games are actually good or fun.

I want to point out that some of Sega’s own videos are flagged as YouTube Kids. I already hate YouTube kids because it’s seems like no matter what video I watch that has the kids mark on it it always recommends the video where phinease and ferb gets busted. An issue with YouTube applying these tags with an algorithm is that it is actually pushing more mature content into the Kids section. It has an unfortunate double consequence of harming those videos and undermining what is supposed to be an entirely safe area for children to view content. Now, it is of course entirely possible that this policy will not be applied consistently, or that management could just plain change its mind, and fan devs, artists, etc. should definitely keep that in mind. But I don’t see this as a rogue tweet from a PR guy who’s disconnected from company policy, I see it as an officially-endorsed tweet from a PR guy who’s been advised of company policy.

Well, for starters it’s got all of the main gang in it including Cream the Rabbit and her Chao, Cheese. I’m more of a Knuckles fan myself, but having the option to mix it up is always good. Without this first Genesis title and the ensuing versions that dropped on the Master System and Game Gear, we would never have had other Sonic games, movies, lunchboxes; he wouldn’t be a household name at all.

I remember that back in the 1990’s Sega reps made the laughable claim that Sega automatically owned Sonic fan fiction and any original characters created for same. There’s no Mega Drive emulator required, as this is a coded-from-scratch PC executable that’ll run on even weaker PCs, and runs like a dream on the Steam Deck. Contrary to popular belief, creating a “good” Sonic The Hedgehog game is quite difficult.

But there are also completely original video games developed by indie devs. On a YouTube channel connected to the expo, you can currently catch streams where folks play through the various fan-created games and indie titles. Sonic World is an arcade-style fan game engine dedicated to the successful Adventures series of games. It’s a powerful improvement over the classic BlitzSonic engine, paving it way to better performance and a lot more. The game is very much customizable to create whatever fits your liking. Each stage comes with its own theme, level design, and background.

It breaks the doubts of many people, proves that the combination of Sonic’s traditional series and the open world is feasible. Sonic Frontier Unknown has many flaws, but it’s still a fun Sonic game, and also pointed out a new direction for the running blue hedgehog. Sonic Frontiers is an all-around solid Sonic the Hedgehog game. The shift to a more open-world style of gameplay works almost entirely in its favor and allows the game to offer more freedom and exploration without resorting to werehogs. At heart, it’s still the same basic 3D-style gameplay that the franchise has been doing lately, but the change in perspective works in its favor. Not every change is a winner, but enough are that I dearly hope that Sega sticks with this flavor instead of reinventing the wheel.
